On Christmas Eve 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke boarded LANSA Flight 508 with her mother. Minutes later, lightning struck the plane mid-air over the Peruvian Amazon. The aircraft disintegrated, and Juliane was sucked out — still strapped to her seat row — plummeting nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) into the dense rainforest.
She woke up alive. Alone. Injured. With nothing but a torn dress and one sandal.
What followed was one of the most badass solo wilderness survival stories ever recorded. For 11 days, Juliane fought through concussion, a broken collarbone, torn ligaments, maggot-infested wounds, starvation, and the relentless dangers of the Amazon jungle. Using only the basic rainforest knowledge her biologist parents had taught her, she made critical decisions that turned a death sentence into an incredible escape.
