[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_00]: All right, welcome back to the Survival and Basic Badass Podcast, Kevin and Chuck. Today we're
[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_00]: talking about the Get Home Bag. Now the Get Home Bag is kind of to me the most important
[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_00]: prep that you could have because it's going to cover a lot of your other stuff and just add
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_00]: that extra layer of security. I mean, I guess you could argue, well, my rifle is my number one item
[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_00]: and maybe you could say long-term food storage. I don't. But anyway, it's right up there. Top three,
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_00]: give me that, all right? And you can argue with it in the comments and I'd be happy to hear it.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Happy to hear it. So anyway, so we're going to go through a list of why you need to get home bag.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_00]: What is a Get Home Bag and what the heck am I putting in it? All that's going to be covered
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_00]: and we're going to go deep. I know we've talked about this before but like I said, it really is
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_00]: essential prepping, you know, things that you need and you need to work out for yourself.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's kind of get started. So first of all, what is a Get Home Bag? In my mind,
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: a Get Home Bag should be like backpack size, right? This is I have one that's just like a
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_00]: one one tactical backpack and I got it loaded to the hill. But it's just a backpack. Now,
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_00]: other guys have some kind of hike pack and I gotta say if I lived like in Alaska,
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_00]: it might be like a frame like kind of that I had in the Boy Scouts of Framed Pack that's a little
[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_00]: more substantial, right? That guy's probably, you know, you do tailor it to your life but I expect
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: to be mostly in civilization but I might be running into the trails to get away from civilization
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_00]: but I don't expect to be in in the deep woods or icy north or something like that, right?
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, you would tailor it to you. And what's you're not going to have the same,
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_01]: you're not going to be packing, you know, jackets and hats if you live in Southern California.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. And that's the thing like I have stuff to stay warm but I'm not
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: in ridiculous like over the top. With staying warm that over the top for me would be,
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to dress have gear like I live in Chicago or Alaska,
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_00]: that's the same as the guy who lives in North Carolina, right? That doesn't really make sense.
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of a waste. Takes up space in my car, takes up, you know. All right. So the first thing
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: that always jumps out at me with people's get-get home bags and this is the reason
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: mine is a straight backpack like an absac kind of thing. I mean, it's a little sturdy or
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: it's maybe a little beefier but it's, you know, right? It's normal. Now, the thing is you want to
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: blend in, right? You don't want to look like hey, that guy's got some good shit. That could be
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_00]: really important to me. Look at him and his big army bag and his, you know, he planned ahead
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and he's tactical and there's probably something in that bag that I want. Right? You don't want
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_00]: to be that guy. You want to be like, oh, I just grabbed whatever I had in my car through my laptop
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_00]: in here and I'm going home, you know. That's how I think how you wanted to be. So I don't know.
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_00]: If you saw the video, my is like a light blue. It's not a bright color. It's not flashy or draw
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_00]: tension. It's very subdued but it's still not like Ody Green and it's not black. That actually is
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_00]: intentional. I did that because again, I don't want to be screaming, hey, look at me. I'm, I'm prepared
[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_00]: and you guys all are not. That's not who you want to be. So that's the first thing. Again,
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_00]: maybe if you're lost in the woods in Alaska, you and about one, how many people are you,
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_00]: running into if you're lost in the woods, probably not many. Two, other people are a private
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_00]: prepared to that level also. I can't imagine you live in the middle of nowhere and that other
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_00]: people aren't as prepared as well or life doesn't work out so well for you. Well made bag
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: non-descript. That's what I see here. So that's definitely the way to go in my opinion. Now,
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: made by 5-1 tactical, what's weird is I bought it at like a gander mountain or something. But
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and I saw it. I was like, you know, that's perfect. Then it was reasonably priced. I think it was
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_00]: like 59 bucks. It does have the camel back which definitely sets you above other backpack
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_00]: water bladder that fits in the back and has a line that you can kind of right. How slow you're on
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_00]: but having that extra water storage is going to pay off in my book. To me that that's almost
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_00]: essential. I really like that. To me, that's a big benefit. Carrying a lot of water bottles
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_00]: is not an easy feat. So that's something you want to be aware of. Again, I looked for the bag.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I was trying to get like an image for the cover of the podcast and I was like, oh, I'll just
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_00]: search it out. I could not find one for sale at all that was in like a reasonable color. They were
[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_00]: black or Ody Green or or camel. 5-1-1 did not have a single thing anywhere I looked
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: online. I could not and I'm searching like colored 5-1 bag, you know, and I couldn't find anything.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that doesn't exist. Maybe you need to find something else. If I didn't have a choice,
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I probably would land on black and just look like a normal map sack and you do what you can do.
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, and black is definitely available. So that's something. Kevin, do you have
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: to get home bag in your car or in your vehicle or more believe it or not? I do not have a packed
[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_01]: get home bag in my car. What I have is a box of things that I need and a backpack. That works.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: What the intention is with that is that I'm not going to just grab the bag and be ready to go.
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to pick and choose what's going to go in there. I don't want to carry more shit that
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I need. I'm not going to throw jumper cables in my backpack, but you want to have access to
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: stuff that is going to keep you warm when it's cold out. But if it's 90 degree, day and August,
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_01]: you're not going to have that stuff in your bag. You don't need to be carrying sweatshirts and gloves
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_00]: and all that shit around with it. I think when the moment comes, I plan to immediately open it up,
[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_00]: kind of go through. All right, what's going to be relevant to this problem? Right, you know?
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of the stuff that I have in the bag is going to be stuff that I might use just
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_01]: in my car. Like the first aid kit, you know? I have that in my car that might go in my bag,
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_01]: right if I need to head out. But I'm going to have access to that at any time. Just like
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_01]: survival knife and extra socks and that sort of thing. There's going to be stuff that
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to use more than just in that bag that I might just use for my day-to-day life
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_01]: that I have access to in my vehicle. But the bag is going to get packed with what I want to have
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_00]: when it's time to go. Right, and that's the thing. I mean, I definitely would clear out my bag of
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_00]: anything that I'm not going to use or need plus honestly taking the two minutes to go through it
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and refresh yourself with what's in there, what's going bad, whatever, is going to only help you.
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Because you obviously don't want to carry something that's not going to be practical.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: There would be a ways to be your effort. So, it's not a script bag.
[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, they've paid off like we've been out, we'll go hiking or something
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and the kids are falling down. Oh, I need water. Oh, whatever. And then having, oh, I have
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_00]: some bottled water in there. Again, if I'm the dead heat of summer going on a big road trip
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_00]: in July, I actually throw a case of bottled water in the back of the car. Yeah. And now again,
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not carrying that. I might get home, but I'm going to have everybody hydrate before we go and maybe
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, grab a bottle and eat it. It's very appropriate. You know what I can carry, right?
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_00]: That's something to think about. Now, maybe you're going home back. If you have little kids,
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_00]: you have, you know, other people with you, they, you know, you need to accommodate for them.
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_00]: And make sure that they have what they need and, you know, supplies for them. Maybe a
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_00]: sweatshirt for the kids. Maybe, you know, that kind of stuff. So, all right, I mean, I don't want
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: to make this suspense too long. Now, what are some emergencies? Because I do want to get into
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_00]: what's actually in the get home bag in a second here. But what are some of the emergencies that
[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_00]: even come up? Like, why would you need to get home bag? Well, one, you could just break down, right?
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Your car can break down and maybe you don't want random people to pick you up or maybe there
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_00]: is nobody to pick you up right there. You know, you know, the cars that stop and you don't want
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_00]: to be desperate, right? That's always the thing. It gives you options. You know, the big,
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_00]: prepper thing is, oh, well, what if the grid went down? Well, maybe I'm out on vacation,
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_00]: the grid goes down. I don't know how to gas. Well, grid goes down. They're not pumping gas, right?
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the big thing. And, you know, that kind of thing. Maybe something happens and a road actually
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_00]: gets blocked. I remember in DC about two, three years ago coming home, there was a big snowstorm
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_00]: that shut down the highway, 95 or, you know, whatever runs right through the edge of DC and it's like
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_00]: 495 or whatever. But it stopped and people had to sleep in their car. It was like 14 or 15 hours
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_00]: in their car. Turns out people didn't have gas for that, you know? You don't, that kind of thing,
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, you don't plan, hey, I'm going to get gas at the next light, but if I have to leave my car
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_00]: running with the heat on, I might not be able to make it for two hours. Right. Yeah. And there
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: was a, there's a situation a few years back in Chicago where that happened a few years has probably
[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: a lot longer than that. But it was like snowstorm and I don't know if everybody's familiar with
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_01]: like lake effect issues, with snow, you know? It'll do like a foot an hour, you know? Yeah. And so
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_01]: basically the through the highway there just stopped. Nobody was moving anywhere and the snow was
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_01]: building up and people were running at a gas and they were, you know, moving like getting into
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_01]: another car with somebody else and then there would run out of gas and then they move up to the next
[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_01]: car and they don't get, you know, get together and stay warm. But there's a certain amount of time where
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_01]: your everybody's out of gas, what are you going to do? You got, you got to, you know, moving or
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_00]: stay warm inside. I got to say that's a practical tip of the pros that I wouldn't have considered,
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_00]: you know? Like, you know, if you're in that snowstorm, maybe you showed, you see a car with just one
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_00]: person or two people in it in front of you. Maybe you go tap on their window. Hey, why don't you
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_00]: guys sit in my car? We'll run the gas out here and then we'll swap to the other car, you know,
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_00]: we're halfway through or we'll run mine halfway down and then we'll run yours halfway down. Right.
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, that kind of thing. Maybe you can work together, turns out prolonged, you know,
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_00]: goodness, right? Right exactly. Something to consider, you know, if we could run mine down
[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_00]: until the fuel light comes on and then we'll run yours down until then. And that way,
[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_00]: we can at least drive out of here if it ever clears up. You know, like, we don't have to go to zero
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_00]: if we work together. I mean, that's smart like outside the box thinking that I want to say,
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it occurs to everybody because we're so conditioned, stranger danger, you know? Don't,
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_00]: don't. And then, of course, there's always the big, the number one, prepper novel,
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_00]: every apocalypse that can prevent scenario is, you know, well, in the MP, right? What if everything
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_00]: shuts down? Right. Again, even if any MP doesn't take out all the vehicles, maybe it takes out
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_00]: pumping more gas and if it takes out pumping more gas, you get halfway home from your long trip
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_00]: and not all the way home because a lot of people don't really keep their tank pretty full.
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Right. They go right to the limit, you know? So these are all the things, right? These are the reasons
[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_00]: we have a get home bag and that's what I got on that. But now let's kind of dig into what is in
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_00]: your get home bag. Now before I get started though, well, is I have a caveat. I have my every day
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_00]: carry and my everyday carry items are not in my get home bag, right? Because they would be in addition
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_00]: because I'm already carrying them. So if you carry a handgun all the time, then that's not going
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_00]: to be in your get home bag because that's something you already have with you, right? So same thing,
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: it might be a cold. There's always like a leatherman or some kind of multi tool. It's always a
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: leatherman in my case, but, you know, I guess there's other brands that might be okay for you
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_00]: other people, but not for me. Like, saw Gak actually makes something good. Gerber, I don't even
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_00]: know if I can talk to you guys, we'll say. But, you know, something like that, right? It is very
[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: useful typically. It is for me. Again, things you know how to use. I usually have extra magazines
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_00]: in my vehicle. Those could then be added to my get home bag. Again, maybe you live in some crazy
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_00]: place like New York City and you can't have a firearm, then having maybe a tire iron in your car.
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_00]: And maybe having that straight bar is kind of the answer, you know? Something like that,
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_00]: that's probably going to be added to my bag on the way out. By the way, every New York City,
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_01]: you can have a gun. You're just not allowed to. Oh, you know, oh, oh, I see. Oh,
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_01]: it's still a positive. I live in New York City. I think that might be something that I would
[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_00]: have in your car. Yeah. I know, that's everybody's like, oh, you have to take that gun out of
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_00]: your car before you go to the city. You're not allowed to have it. That's probably what you have
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_00]: to. That's probably where you need it. Kevin, let me stress that we are not lawyers and this is just
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: for entertainment purposes. And this is, yeah. No, that's right. That's right. Doves and anything we
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_00]: say anything we say could be, you know, used the wrong way. All right, you just had to put that out there.
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_00]: So with that said, what else would you have maybe have in your in your bag, Kevin? Or,
[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_00]: well, wait, would you have anything else with your everyday carry like some people carry a knife?
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that's, that's the basic stuff for a knife. You know, some some, you know,
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_01]: you carry a multi tool. I don't carry a multi tool on me. You know, I carry it in my vehicle.
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I carry a pocket knife and that's that's pretty much it. Young trucks obviously great,
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_01]: great option legal in New York state and most states now. They're legal in New York now. They
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_00]: were not when like right before I left this when they changed that law. Yeah. They brought them back
[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_00]: into to regular circulation. Now me, I would just take an eye out, but you know, maybe you
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_00]: maybe you guys, that's a little something better, right? Right. Right. All right. So
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_01]: we have yeah one of the things that is on my list is is, is uh, top of my list is socks and shoes.
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Wolf socks is, you know, there's nothing worse than wet feet. And every day I wear hiking boots.
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_01]: That's my my standard footwear wear with work and and that sort of stuff. But uh, you know,
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_01]: which is great. And you can walk on the road just finding in hiking boots. But I also carry a pair
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_01]: of running shoes. That way, you know, if you're on the road, that's better footwear than
[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_01]: hiking boots. If you're off the road, that's not the ideal footwear. Right. Um, yeah. How
[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_01]: there are two big things for me is socks and shoes. I mean, I everywhere I go any time I go
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_01]: hiking or anything like that. I always bring twice as many socks as I need to because just being
[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_01]: able to take wet socks off and put in dry ones on, you know, makes a big difference. 100%. And a lot of
[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_00]: when people are traveling like you're heading to a wedding or something like that. And you
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_00]: might be wearing your dress shoes, you know, and it might be like a three hour drive, you know,
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_00]: and you're in the suit and you got your dress shoes and whatever, you don't want to be stuck
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_00]: where it's like, oh, shit, I have to walk home in dress shoes or worse, your wife and heels or,
[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, something like that, right? That that's going to be traumatic. So throwing if you know
[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: you're not wearing comfortable, capable shoes, making sure that you have some kind of other shoes
[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_00]: in your car is going to be go to. Now me, my job, I'm never not wearing comfortable shoes, right?
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_00]: This is like the super rare exception. You know, I'm always wearing shoes that I could walk home,
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: not because I'm cool like that and I'm always prepared it's because I like to be comfortable,
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, lazy guy, you know, you know, I'm a comfortable guy. And so but the rare exception
[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_00]: that I'm driving in my suit or whatever, then I can, you know, do that. Make sure the extra
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_00]: shoes are in there. If your daily life has you wearing a suit every day or dress shoes or whatever
[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_00]: that kind of thing, make sure that you're keeping an extra pair in the car because that's always
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_00]: gonna matter. You know, even if it's walking two miles or three miles to a gas station because
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_00]: you ran out of gas. Now I know we all all keep our gas tanks full and, you know, that kind of thing.
[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_00]: But I'm just saying just in case. And you know, sometimes shit happens. Sometimes the car breaks.
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_00]: The wife, we have a minivan that we bought. She has a flower farm and carries flowers to places.
[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And she was driving and believe it or not, the bolt that holds the alternator bracket broke
[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_00]: like sheared off. And so it basically put slack on the belt. So the alternator wasn't charging
[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_00]: anymore. And it was weird. She was able to drive like completely home, which usually without an
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_00]: alternator that kind of wipes you out. Like I don't like because it was like 20 miles. I'm like
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_00]: doesn't seem like that should have worked. But it did. So whatever. So you know, I'll thank God for
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_00]: that I guess. Take the win. But that's the thing. The unexpected can happen and your left on the
[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_01]: side of the road. You know? And that's just for a, just happen to me. I bought a brand new, not brand
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_01]: new, I bought a used car, new for me. Yeah. And I had just made the second payment on it and
[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_01]: transmission dropped that transmission stop. You don't even need a transmission. You know what I'm
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_01]: saying? And I was in the middle of nowhere, you know? And luckily I had just left the friend's house
[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_01]: and he just came by and you know took me to it was late at night. So nobody was, nothing was open.
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_01]: But he came by and we got the car over to a mechanic shop and he gave me right home. But uh,
[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, that didn't have to be the case. I didn't have to be close to somebody I knew.
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_00]: No, exactly. So all right. So let's, let's dig in. So there's a couple of categories
[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_00]: of things that we could talk about being in your get home bag. Now again, I almost everything for
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_00]: security is in my everyday carry or like I said, maybe it's going to be some kind of weapon.
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to find in my car, you know, be at the the tire iron or something like that. But,
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_00]: people always say, oh, firearm and ammo, you may have extra ammo. If maybe you're a 9
[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_00]: millimeter carry guy kind of thing, then having, you know, a 50 round brick of 9 millimeter might be cool.
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Again, that's something you might say, hey, that's too heavy. Where I am, I'm not going to need that.
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_00]: That's not relevant. I'm not going to carry that all the way that's heavy. But maybe you keep it.
[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_00]: That's up to you. You get to decide. That's the thing when you give yourself options.
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_00]: You could also look at like pepper spray, you know, something like that. Those are the things
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_00]: you could have in your bag. Next I would say lighting is always crucial. I always my go back
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_00]: has a head lamp and I actually have a bunch of these little LED like clip on like little press lights.
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's funny because they, they like barely light up. But I got to say if you're trying to be
[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_00]: discreet in the dark, having the tactical thing right, I need cool because you can just like,
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_00]: all right, I can see what's going on and do stuff with it. That might be something to do.
[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_00]: People do do like candles and stuff to me. That's not something I would do.
[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Right. It's not in my get home bag. It's I'm going to have flashlights that are going to last as long
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_00]: as a candle. Well, and if you're like, well, are you going to go 24 hours? Well, then I'm going
[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_00]: to bring extra batteries if I'm really feeling like I need a nightlight to get me through something.
[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, you do you, right? That's, you know, now food. How do you do food in your
[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_00]: get home bag? One, it's got to be something that's going to last at least a year. Right.
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to, I would recommend going through and making sure your get home bag is complete
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_00]: every year. The, just go right through it and just pull it out because you never know, hey, I grabbed
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_00]: that, you know, first aid kit out of there for for that time Jimmy skin Disney and where I came
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_00]: up on that car accident and I burned through the turnic kit and the quick plot and everything
[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_00]: and it's not there. So you want to make sure one, you replenish it as you go, but two once a year
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_00]: just give, put your eyes on it and make sure. Make sure something didn't come apart and leak
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_00]: in there and ruin a bunch of stuff. You don't know unless you check, right? And if you were like,
[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_00]: well, Chuck, I'm better than you. I check every six months. I say good on you, right? Or maybe you
[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_00]: changed it out for the season. If the seasons change dramatically where you live, good, you know,
[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_00]: get on it. So making sure, you know, you have your fall winner gear in there versus the other,
[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, that's something worth checking out. Next I would say so food,
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I would look for things you could kind of take on the go. Mine, I actually have a 72 hour food bag
[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_00]: from like my Patriots ply and it's got like the whole, you know, 72 hours worth of food
[00:25:59] [SPEAKER_00]: and that's cool. Another thing I've seen is they sell these like big survival bricks that are
[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_00]: like a giant granola bar that's 2400 calories. Think I bought that again or something like that.
[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_00]: That kind of thing, but you also want something like a couple of protein bars, but remember
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_00]: those protein bars don't really last that long. So you know, think about what you can do there
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_00]: and what you can leave in there that's going to last. So I have things that are more
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_01]: permanent and you know, you do you know, this is just that the temperature in your car is fluctuating
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_01]: all the time. You know what I mean? You park in the sun and you got the green, you know,
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_01]: the greenhouse effect going on, you know, you know, middle of winter and it's cloudy out and
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_01]: cars, you know, 20 below zero, you have to be conscientious of that when you're packing food
[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're packing, you know, especially water. Yeah. Another thing that I think is a pretty
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_01]: big deal is cash. Having an extra 100 bucks in your bag is pretty big deal, you can, you know,
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_01]: you can hopefully use your car that you normally use. I barely carry cash anymore in my,
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah. Bricks and MREs are nice, but no toilet paper. Well, the MREs I think have toilet
[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_00]: paper, but I guess it depends where you buy them. You know, but true, true military ones I thought had
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_00]: had the T.P. Anyway, Stanley Cookset, I use that. I have a bigger one that I just got
[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_00]: that I haven't made it to the bag, but I think I'm going to keep this one in basically it's got like
[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_00]: two cups, the thing. What I like to do one of the secrets of the pros is I put like instant coffee,
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_00]: like tea bag type things in there or some like beef, bullion cubes, that kind of thing you stuff
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_00]: them in there and then it's hey, I got flavor in there and it didn't take up any more space.
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's kind of cool. That cover suit. I do have toilet paper in my bag. I wrapped it up
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_00]: right, just to keep it dry with extra plastic. But you know, being able to poo and cushion luxury,
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_01]: that's it. That's it. That's it. Go to right. Come on. I mean, seriously, what kind of man
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_01]: are we here talking about? I just go with poopy buttholes, man. That's poopy buttholes. That's what
[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm making. Live free. You know, that said I went to the doctor the other day and I was like,
[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm shower and I'm like, but I guess I don't really need to. It's not like it's a colonoscopy or anything.
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_00]: You know? So whatever. But anyway, I guess that's wrong. So that to me covers food. Now let's talk
[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_00]: about, you know, fire fires important. To be honest, I have like three lighters in there. To me,
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_00]: that's really your go-to right. You should know how to build a quality fire. You should know how
[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_00]: to, you know, keep a fire going. What kind of things you need beforehand? That kind of thing
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_00]: to build a keep a fire going. I don't think we need to get that traumatic in that. If you do
[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_00]: have matches, understand those little match books, do wear out and, you know, they get kind of
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_00]: soggy and soft and they're kind of pulling on it. Yeah. They're good when they're fresh and whatever.
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And if you buy, and you can pay a whole bunch of money for, you know, the white light matches,
[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_01]: the strike on anything matches. And you can spend a whole lot of money on that, but you can just have
[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_01]: a couple of lighters, you know, stick one in your glove box, stick one in your bag, stick one
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_00]: in, you know, to me that's practical. Right. Again, if it's cool if you're familiar with your bag,
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_00]: that's a big thing where like, you know, when you, you know, when when you do your annual check,
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_00]: it kind of reminds you, hey, this is what's in there and you don't, you know, miss things.
[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Next up my list would be water waters obviously foundational life, you know, kind of important.
[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Right. And so I have several bottles of water just right out of the gate because you want some
[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_00]: water there. Right. Again, you got to be aware, hey, is that going to freeze in the winter time
[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_00]: in my car? That kind of thing. Be aware, pay attention. Obviously, the bladder is not full
[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_00]: in my case. I would recommend it and I have not yet purchased. I want to actually do a show on it
[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_00]: is they have the pumps, them for while you're out on the go for the trail to pump to fill up your
[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_00]: water bottles. You want to make sure you keep those water bottles so you have the storage
[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_00]: container, so when you do find a good water source, you can, you know, carry it. The, I actually
[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_00]: had this, we had a listener send us a, a, a water filter that's pretty freaking awesome. I know
[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Kevin checked it out in a pond. We did a video on it way back. I did not, did not get sick from it.
[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_00]: That was pretty nasty pond. And it was a pretty nasty pond all day. So, you know, that's pretty cool.
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll see if I can find the link for that and throw it in the show notes. But yeah, that would be
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_00]: a great go to another thing that I would say is, you need to think about shelter. Now, shelter
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_00]: is tough. Now, shelter could include like a sleeping bag. I don't my wife, now I definitely have
[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_00]: some bigger than, I don't know if I have it right here. I have larger than, like they have this
[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_00]: little thermal blankets that people like, they're kind of cool. But they make some like in between
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_00]: medium ones that are like this, the bitty bags kind of thing that have an actual like sleeping bag,
[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, that you go into better like the thermal blankets. They're like $10 versus $1, that might
[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_00]: make the difference in your comfort. I don't know. I know my wife, we lived in New York. There was
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_00]: always a sleeping bag in the car. Hey, the kids get cold. The heat stops working in the car.
[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_00]: They can just throw it over them and stay warm, you know, that kind of thing. Because turns out
[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_00]: you want them to always dress for the weather and be prepared, but people don't always make those
[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_00]: choices. So to me, that counts as shelter, right? But having extra, you know, my large blankets,
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_00]: that kind of thing, they do a little secret of the pros, they do come in like Ody Green.
[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_00]: And you're like, well, why would that matter? Well, if you were trying to hide from somebody
[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_00]: with thermal imaging from a helicopter, I'm just saying being under where you have no heat source
[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_00]: because you're under a thermal blanket. And it's got a, you know, camo kind of color that might pay off.
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_00]: If you're running from the FBI, this might be for sale on Amazon for about 10 bucks for a three
[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_00]: pack. I'm just saying that might be cool. Just saying, I do keep some like this version of paracord
[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_00]: in there. Like that, you know, again, it's like a go to, and some people do like small 10 stuff.
[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. I mean, I guess if you have the budget that you can get something really tiny,
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_00]: to me, that's not in my get home bag, right? I know how to make a shelter and I just have
[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_00]: not willing to carry that much, right? Because I'm assuming if I'm hiking, it's more than a day
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_00]: and it's got to be more than a day. If I really need shelter, I'm just sleeping in the car and
[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_00]: in the morning or two, if I really need shelter, I don't want to be carrying an extra freaking
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_00]: tent if I'm hiking that far. You know, if it's like the five day trip and that kind of thing,
[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_00]: just putting that out there, right? Now having like a raincoat or one of those ponchos kind
[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_00]: of thing, not a bad idea because when things go bad, they suck. You could kind of count on your
[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_00]: shelter, maybe under medical, but I always have deep woods off in there. The hardcore bug sprays
[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_00]: really pay off. Also, sunblock is huge. Having sunscreen if you live in area like that,
[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_00]: a lot of times a ball cap, that kind of thing will make a big difference. Those might be things
[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_00]: you just keep in the car that you don't like necessarily in the bag. That's definitely now
[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_00]: first aid. In my car, this is usually separate. This one, I actually have in my get home bag as well
[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_00]: as in my car just because it's important to me, but I have like a trauma bag and now mine,
[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I always do like homemade because I just wanted to be what I want in there. They they sell them
[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_00]: like pre-made and whatever, but I basically have like the Israeli bandage. I have shares.
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I have quick clot and I have turnic it. You know, that kind of thing, by a quality turnicit,
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_00]: that kind of stuff, that matters, right? Having that stuff accessible and whatever and if things
[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_00]: go bad, it's nice to have it. Next, I would say, what else you got? I wrote out a big list.
[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I'd be beyond top of it. A lot of rules and stuff, the only other, you know, I mentioned the
[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_00]: multi tool, I keep a foldable buck knife in my bag and that's assuming I don't have something with
[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_00]: me, otherwise like just on the well, it doesn't hurt to throw it in there right. And yeah, that was
[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Google Bag, a toolbox in my car. You know what I mean? Like the truth is, I'm not going to
[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_01]: probably not going to come up that I'm going to need a Phillips head screwdriver on the walk home.
[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but I don't know what the situation's going to be and it's best to be able to make the decision
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_00]: right then as your move and you know. Right. Now, some people talk about, I've seen other things
[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_00]: in their bags like N95 masks. I don't have that in my bag. I do have them in my bug out bag and
[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_00]: like long term, I do have that kind of thing but that's not something I carry in my car.
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_00]: People talk about a bandana. You know, they what when, you know, yellowstone, you know, a
[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_00]: rupt or something, you know, you're ready for the extra debris. You're right. You beat me on
[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_00]: that one and I'm sorry, I dropped the ball. It could be because I live in North Carolina that
[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I might have some warning on that. But you know, you do you again, I want access to
[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_00]: that stuff but I don't think it needs to be in my get home bag. People have that. I mean,
[00:37:39] [SPEAKER_01]: you have to be conscientious that this is a bag you're planning on carrying. That's an extended
[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_01]: distance. You don't need 500 pounds of shit. Now, I actually went online and searched it out
[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and I did find a four person car emergency kit bag that you can bring with you and it's only
[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_01]: $240 and it's full of subpar shit. So, quality, I just have one 50. Yeah, you can buy the stuff
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: pre-made and it's going to be trash and you're going to over spend for it. If you want this garbage
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_00]: in there, you could probably do it for about 50 bucks at the hour store and you could get pretty good.
[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And I say garbage, I just mean not premium brands, right? I just mean pretty good. I do carry a
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_00]: little road atless paper. We are all so dependent on GPS and our phones. So, like it used to be,
[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_00]: man, I can remember, I know I'm older than the rest of you but I used to like print out a map of the
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_00]: house. You'd be like, I'm going to go this road to this and whatever and I know and have that
[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_00]: but we don't do that anymore. Like I said, I don't know if I can get to work without that might
[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_00]: be a slight exaggeration. But you know what I mean, right? I couldn't get the local airport that's only
[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_00]: an hour away without a map. It's how we are. We're conditioned that way anymore.
[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_00]: But that's something to think about. You know, how do I do that? Like I said, one of the
[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_00]: big overlooked is always like bugs spray sunscreen. Those really matter if you're in the wrong environment
[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_00]: and things go shitty. They talked about like bandana. I know guys used to roll up duct tape
[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_00]: and have some duct tape there. I feel like there's not much I couldn't do with paracord
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_00]: that I'd be like, oh, I wish I had duct tape. Now again, does it patch a hole in something?
[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe, all right, maybe I'm wrapping my boots, right? Maybe I'm wearing through the soul on
[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_00]: my boot on the way home and I put it just like yeah, might happen but it probably won't.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I do have a roll of like 3M or actually I think it's like gorilla tape in my truck.
[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_00]: So if it broke, yeah, I'd have that and to be honest, I've actually made radiator hose for
[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_00]: pairs with it like on the fly in my previous truck. So you know, I mean those things can come up and
[00:40:11] [SPEAKER_00]: and good. Somebody have mentioned pink killers. I will say having like, yeah, I'm all skin,
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_00]: that kind of thing in your bag. In my car, I have a first aid kit that is not the trauma bag.
[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_00]: And that first aid kit does have things like that like aspirin, like Tylenol, like band aids
[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_00]: and you know, because yeah, that kind of thing, you know, crappy footwear stuff like that can
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_00]: end bad. Tylenol, something like that would be beneficial. I've seen guys do a lot about
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_00]: flavored water and it is and and that was the thing too we talked about water. I talked about
[00:40:57] [SPEAKER_00]: the pumps, the life straw and and I showed you I had a filter that was similar but they also
[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_00]: sell little packets of like they're basically like chlorine. They just say water treatment tablets
[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_00]: and you can buy a mess where they're like iodine and they do that or you can buy ones that are
[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_01]: chlorine. And whatever you get, you just have to know how to use it. There's different
[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_01]: processes for each one. Some of them you have to wait 30 minutes. Some of them you need to shake
[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_01]: up and whatever but whatever you get just use it. Use it once, you know? Now some people talk about
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_00]: comms in there. I don't know, to me that's extra space. If I had it in the car and I'm cool
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_00]: you know that kind of stuff that helps but you know, you can only do so much, right? You can only
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_00]: do the best you can and you need something practical that's going to get you there. And to me
[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_00]: those are the practical items. So I did put together a list and it has all the practical items
[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_00]: and then I added some like wish I had kind of things that I might add to it. But again
[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I would kind of use your own discretion for like the bonus area because that's like you,
[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, it might pertain to you like having extra diapers for your two-year-old or whatever.
[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's a thing, right? Because that would suck if your kids like blowing out, you know,
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_00]: whatever and you know, that might be something you need but it's not something I needed. Right?
[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. So I have to say I'm extremely grateful that I don't have any kids under
[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_01]: four or five years old anymore, you know? God, right? Makes life so much easier. I don't need that in my life.
[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know. That's a crazy world. But that's what I got. You know, just be prepared.
[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_00]: We wanted to do an episode that kind of got back to the fundamentals of prepping. And what I looked at it,
[00:42:54] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, you know, really this is the core of prepping is having that in your bag.
[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's a thing like everyone's like, oh, you know, I'm a prepper. I need ways to build a
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_00]: shelter and fire and whatever and they put all this stuff in their house and I'm like,
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_00]: you already have shelter. You're in your house. It's okay. And if your house burns down,
[00:43:15] [SPEAKER_00]: you might, you should be nice enough to your neighbors that you can go over there and be like,
[00:43:19] [SPEAKER_00]: hey, let me stay until I get this worked out. Right? Yeah. You know, maybe, you know,
[00:43:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, to go to the hotel tomorrow. I don't mean you're going to, you know,
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_00]: gonna move in. I don't know how nice you are to your neighbors. But they might not like,
[00:43:33] [SPEAKER_00]: hey, tell me rebuild. Yeah. Just, you know, shack up here.
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Six, seven months tops. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You hear, you know, my kids, oh, and I have my dogs too.
[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I just wanted to say, you know, hey, it's, you know, that's how it goes sometimes. Right?
[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. I've also not seen very many new reviews lately. So it's kind of need to review.
[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_00]: That's a great little pick me up. What I did do is I put a link. It's not set up this minute. Well,
[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_00]: the link is set up and you can subscribe to our email list. And if you subscribe to our email list
[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_00]: within 24 hours from now, I will send you a get home bag checklist that you can, you know,
[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_00]: go ahead and just get that. Also, if you go to proper camp this year, there's,
[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_00]: don't even know if they have tickets anymore. You got to get a commit. But if you come over to the
[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_00]: booth and check us out, I can hook you up with your own get home bag checklist. So, you know,
[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_00]: to say it, you know, the things I do for you, right? And when I say hook you up, I mean,
[00:44:39] [SPEAKER_00]: work free. It's not going to cost you anything. So yeah, you just sign up on the email list and
[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_00]: you can go through it. You don't have to worry that you just tried to take notes up while you were
[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_00]: driving, listening to the podcast. I got you. I'm worried about your safety. Now, if I was really
[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_00]: worried about your safety, I probably would have told you that at the beginning of the episode. Let's
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_00]: do. But, you know, I can only do so much of just one man. All right. So with that, I really appreciate
[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_00]: it. You guys have show ideas, thoughts, concerns, things you want to tell us. You can email us at
[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_00]: preppingbadas at gmail.com. Again, check out the website, also preppingbadas.com. And
[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_00]: it's also survival and basic badass podcast.com. But preppingbadas is easier to remember, I think.
[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. Anyway, so with that, I would say stay safe and we will talk to you guys next week.
